The map pack is the whole game
Search "plumber Irvine" on a phone and look at what you get: a map with three businesses, then the ads, then eventually the ordinary results. Those three positions take the overwhelming majority of the clicks. Ranking fourth in the map is much closer to ranking nowhere than it is to ranking third.
Those three slots are not decided by your website alone. They are decided mostly by your Google Business Profile, which is free, which most businesses fill in halfway, and which is the highest return hour of work available to a local trade.
What decides it
Proximity, which you cannot change
Google weights how close you are to the person searching. This is why you will rank in your own city and struggle two cities over, and it is why a business in Lake Forest chasing Newport Beach searches needs a page about Newport Beach rather than hope.
Your profile, which you completely control
Primary category exactly right, not approximately right. Every service listed individually. Service area set to the cities you actually work. Real photos, added regularly, not a logo and two stock images. Hours that are correct including holidays. Posts, weekly, which almost nobody does and which visibly moves profiles in competitive categories.
Reviews, which you influence
Count matters, recency matters more than people expect, and responses matter. A profile with forty reviews where the most recent is eight months old reads as a business that has gone quiet. Ten reviews in the last ninety days beats forty from two years ago.
Your website, which supports all of it
The site backs up the profile. Same business name, same address format, same phone number everywhere. Service pages for each thing you do. City pages for each place you work, written about that place rather than the same paragraph with the name swapped, which Google has been demoting for years.
Orange County specifically
This county is not one market. Santa Ana, Irvine, Huntington Beach and San Clemente behave like four different countries in terms of what customers search, how they decide and what they will pay. A single page trying to rank across all of them ranks in none.
Two things are more true here than almost anywhere else. Spanish language service is a competitive advantage, because a large share of searches happen in Spanish and almost every competitor's site is English only. And response time decides the job. In a dense market with a dozen options within ten minutes, whoever answers first usually wins, which is why the answering side matters as much as the ranking side.
What to fix this week, in order
- Finish the Google Business Profile. Categories, services, service area, hours, ten real photos. One hour of work, largest single effect.
- Ask your last ten happy customers for a review. Send the direct link.
- Check your site on a phone on mobile data. If it takes more than three seconds, that is costing you more than any keyword.
- Split your services onto separate pages. One page per thing you want to rank for.
- Write one real page per city you work in. Real neighbourhoods, real detail, not a template.
None of that requires hiring anyone. If you want it checked properly, our SEO audit ranks what is wrong on your specific business by what it is costing you, and you keep the report whether or not you hire us.
